A dear friend of mine, my sister in Christ, recently asked me
a question regarding healing. Though her name and specific details will be kept
private, the broad curiosity has been a common concern. “If healing is God’s
will, why is it that not everyone is healed when we pray for them?” I too have
wondered about this for years, so I decided to seek the Lord for further wisdom and this
is what He’s revealed to me thus far…
Let’s start with the truth about healing; God is a
healer because He says He is and not because our circumstances look like it. Not only that, Jesus IS healing and health. Sickness is the hardest area to cling to that truth because though we may believe
we are already healed, we still feel physical pain. God also does not cause
sickness, nor does He allow it for the sake of giving Himself glory; He doesn’t
hurt His children so He can prove His power. What kind of jacked up father is
that? It reminds me of Munchausen. The only thing responsible for everything
fallen in this world is sin. This is why surrender to trusting the Lord and
following His plan for our lives is vital.
The short answer is that there are countless reasons why some
people aren’t healed after we pray for them, including ourselves. We can’t begin to know all of them, but there
are four very common causes; fear, unbelief, not believing our sins are
forgiven, and not using the dominion and authority God gave us.
COMMON REASONS PEOPLE
AREN’T HEALED
Fear and Unbelief - Some believers
pray “Lord heal my loved one.” Seems genuine enough; but what we can’t see is
when those people are afraid; which means their prayers aren’t in faith, they
are out of fear. We don’t see that fear because when we’re standing with them
in prayer, it looks like everyone believes; yet only God can see what’s really
going on in their hearts. Many people will say they believe God is able,
meanwhile they don’t believe He is willing in their case. One of my husband’s relatives had a child with
a disability and they outright said they believed Jesus’s healing was effectual
for every single disease EXCEPT the one her child had. Her child was never
healed. Jesus Himself couldn’t even command things to leave when people were in
unbelief.
Forgiven and
Dominion: The beginning of Matthew 9 is about a paralytic whom Jesus told
his sins were forgiven; after which He told him to pick up his mat and walk.
The man was told his sins were forgiven and he was healed. My favorite part of
that story is that the town marveled and glorified God…who had given such power
to MEN! Often times there are demonic influences at work, but believers don’t realize
the authority given them, therefore they don’t use it. Something interesting I discovered in the
scriptures is that Jesus NEVER prayed to God for healing; He always spoke directly
to the sickness and told it what to do! Jesus knew the power of God that He had
as a man and He wasn’t afraid to use it! That doesn’t mean we can’t pray and
ask God to heal us, but God already gave US the ability to resist it and speak
to it ourselves! God’s dominion over this earth is THROUGH US!
The bottom line is that it’s never God’s fault. It’s always
because you’ve allowed Satan access in some way, somewhere, at some point; a
pathway into your life to inflict evil upon you. We don’t want to believe this
because we think we (and our loved ones) are good people, but this is why we
need Jesus so badly. It can offend us personally and it hurts to know this
about the ones we love, but that’s just the way it is. It doesn’t matter how
good we think we are; without giving our lives to the Lord and trusting Him in
every way, we open ourselves up for Satan to destroy our lives, which all too
often manifests in the form of sickness and disease.
Let’s pray for eyes to be opened to the reality of the
unseen.
