Most of us know God hates divorce; but do we know why He hates it? I knew He hated it when I got divorced, but my reasons for hesitation were out of fear God would punish me. I was never taught the reason why God hates divorce, and it is very important to know that because it will help you to have a better understanding of what marriage is supposed to be.
In today's society, we've made everything breakable. Now days when people get married, we hear, "If it doesn't work out we can always just get divorced"; we've given ourselves a way out before ever making it in. Marriages, family, bank accounts, gym memberships, car notes, you name it; we've become terrified of commitment.
Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church; it's designed to be the natural manifestation of our spiritual covenant with Christ as His bride. The covenant God makes with His children is eternal. It will never be broken, so divorce pollutes the view of our relationship with Christ and gives us a flawed perspective of a perfect reality. To put it bluntly; it makes God look bad, and causes us to believe wrongly of Him.
There are many things God hates and detests; most of them listed in Proverbs 6. He hates things, He made guidelines, He set restrictions, and He allows consequences; but it's not because He's a dictator who sits back and watches us as we go through life alone. He's not a narcissist just waiting for a moment to ensue pain on His kids. He puts all these things in place to protect us because He knows the pain, suffering, and damage it will cause. He loves us and He doesn't want us going through that.
When you know touching a hot stove will burn your hand; wouldn't you tell your children not to do it?
